Buying detailing tools safely
Before you buy a polisher or paint gauge online: confirm the maker states the voltage, read safety marks for what they prove and check who is selling.
Short answer
Before you pay, check three things on the exact listing: that the maker itself states a voltage and plug for North America, that any safety mark is on the product and can be checked with the certifier, and who is really selling. A store's name, an "Official" label or a Brand Store does not show who sells a given offer.[1][2]
Voltage: the maker must state it
For a corded polisher, the supply voltage and plug come first, and they should come from the maker, not only from a listing field. Some maker pages do not give them: SPTA's page for its CP501 polisher gives orbit options and a 1100 W rating, and RUPES's page for the LHR15ES gives orbit, plate size, power and speed, but neither states a supply voltage, plug or safety mark.[3][4] North American suitability is not established from those pages, so look for a US-market model page, manual or nameplate that states it.
Cordless tools move the question to the battery and charger. Buy them from the same maker and platform; the battery platforms overview explains why.
Safety marks: what each proves
| Mark | Who stands behind it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| ETL | Intertek, an OSHA-recognized NRTL | Intertek says ETL-marked products meet the same requirements as products with other NRTL marks[5] |
| UL | UL LLC, an OSHA-recognized NRTL | Its recognized standards include UL 62841 parts for hand-held tools, sanders and polishers[6] |
| CSA, cUL, cETL | Accredited certification bodies | Health Canada tells consumers to look for these on plug-in products[7] |
| CE | The maker's declaration for Europe | Not one of the marks Health Canada names[7] |
Health Canada adds that certification marks must appear on the product itself, not just the packaging.[8] A logo in listing artwork is not enough.
Two examples show how to read what a maker states. Milwaukee's manual for its 2684-20 and 2685-20 polishers includes the cULus mark in its symbology list.[9] UNI-T's UT343E gauge page lists CE and UKCA as its certificates and no North American marks.[10] We report only marks a maker or certifier states. The UL, ETL, CSA and CE guide explains each one.
Who is really selling
- Check the seller line. Canada's Office of Consumer Affairs tells online shoppers to check whether they are buying from the retailer or a third-party seller, looking for "sold by", "shipped by" or "fulfilled by".[11] On Amazon, that is the "Ships from / Sold by" line on the offer.
- A Brand Store is not the seller. Amazon describes a Brand Store as a brand page that needs Brand Registry enrollment; it does not say who sells each offer.[2]
- A store name is not proof. AliExpress says it cannot and does not confirm each member's claimed identity,[1] so an "Official Store" name is a claim, not evidence.
- The marketplace does not vouch for safety. AliExpress's terms say it is not responsible for the quality, safety or lawfulness of products sold on the site.[12]
What the makers say:
| Maker | Where it points buyers |
|---|---|
| Milwaukee | The 2684-20 where-to-buy panel lists US retailers such as Home Depot, ACME Tools and Northern Tool, and did not list Amazon or AliExpress[13] |
| Makita | Makita USA's Shop Online page links its Amazon Brand Store alongside other resellers[14] |
| RUPES | A dealer and distributor locator, plus its own online shop[15] |
| UNI-T | A Singapore distributor; no AliExpress or Amazon store linked[16] |
For batteries, provenance matters more. Makita USA warns that non-genuine Makita lithium-ion batteries may burst and cause fires, injury or property damage.[17]

How to choose a listing
- Voltage and plug stated by the maker for the exact model, for any corded tool.
- A mark on the product that the certifier can confirm, if you want certification evidence.
- A seller you can tie to the brand, or Amazon.com itself on the offer.
- Genuine batteries and the maker's charger for cordless tools.
There is no product box on this page: buying is a set of checks, not a product. Our product picks sit on the polishers, pads, battery platforms and paint gauges overviews, each with the variant and seller check named.

Common questions
How do I know who is selling on Amazon?
Read the 'Ships from' and 'Sold by' lines on the offer you are buying. Canada's Office of Consumer Affairs gives the same advice: check whether you are buying from the retailer or a third-party seller. More in Buying polishers and gauges on Amazon and AliExpress: what to check
Does Makita sell on Amazon?
Makita USA's Shop Online page links its Amazon Brand Store. That does not make every offer Makita's: a Brand Store shows brand enrollment, not who sells a given offer, so still check 'Sold by'. More in Buying polishers and gauges on Amazon and AliExpress: what to check
Is the UNI-T store on AliExpress run by UNI-T?
We could not confirm it. UNI-T's global where-to-buy page names a Singapore distributor and links no AliExpress or Amazon store, and AliExpress says it does not confirm each member's claimed identity. More in Buying polishers and gauges on Amazon and AliExpress: what to check
Can I return a polisher I bought on AliExpress?
Only under the listing's terms. AliExpress's Free Return program covers participating products within 15 calendar days of receipt, subject to its conditions, so check for the Free Return label before ordering. More in Buying polishers and gauges on Amazon and AliExpress: what to check
What is the return window on Amazon?
Amazon.com says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with exceptions, and third-party sellers may handle returns themselves. Check the offer's own return terms. More in Buying polishers and gauges on Amazon and AliExpress: what to check
Is an ETL mark as good as a UL mark?
Intertek, which runs ETL and is an OSHA-recognized NRTL, says ETL-marked products meet the same requirements as products bearing other NRTL marks. UL LLC is on the same OSHA program. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE on power tools
Which safety standard applies to a car polisher?
OSHA's recognition of UL LLC lists UL 62841-1 for hand-held electric tools, with particular parts such as UL 62841-2-3 for disc-type polishers and sanders and UL 62841-2-4 for sanders and polishers other than disc type. That shows the standard a polisher would be certified to, not that any given product is. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE on power tools
Is a CE mark valid in Canada?
Health Canada says plug-in electrical products must be certified by an accredited certification body and tells consumers to look for marks such as CSA, cUL or cETL. CE is not one of the marks it names. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE on power tools
Questions
Does an AliExpress store named 'Official Store' belong to the brand?
Not necessarily. AliExpress's membership terms say it cannot and does not confirm each member's claimed identity. A link from the brand's own website to the store is better evidence than its name.[1]
If a brand has an Amazon Brand Store, is every offer sold by the brand?
No. A Brand Store shows the brand enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry; it does not tell you who sells a given offer. Check 'Ships from' and 'Sold by' on the offer you buy.[2]
Is a CE mark enough for a polisher used in the US or Canada?
Health Canada tells consumers to look for marks such as CSA, cUL or cETL on plug-in products; CE is not one of the marks it names. In the US, UL and ETL marks come from labs OSHA recognizes.[7][5]
Where do Milwaukee, Makita and RUPES say to buy their polishers?
Milwaukee's where-to-buy panel for the 2684-20 lists US retailers but not Amazon or AliExpress. Makita USA links its Amazon Brand Store among other resellers. RUPES points to its dealer locator and its own online shop.[13][14][15]
Who is responsible if a marketplace product is unsafe?
AliExpress's terms say it does not control, and is not responsible for, the quality or safety of products on its site. Look for safety evidence from the maker or a certifier, not the marketplace.[12]
