Buying polishers and gauges on Amazon and AliExpress: what to check
A checklist for buying a polisher, paint gauge or battery on Amazon or AliExpress: the exact model, maker-stated voltage, real seller, marks and returns.

Short answer
Before you pay on Amazon or AliExpress, check six things on the exact offer: the exact model and variant, a supply voltage the maker itself states, who is selling (not the store's name), any safety mark on the product, where the maker says it sells, and the return terms. The seller check is the one most often skipped: an "Official Store" name or a Brand Store does not tell you who sells the offer.[1][2]
The checklist
- Model: the listing names the exact model and variant you want, and the maker's page confirms its specification.
- Voltage: for a corded tool, the maker states the supply voltage and plug for that model.
- Seller: you know who sells the offer and whether the brand points to that seller.
- Marks: any safety mark is on the product and stated by the maker or certifier.
- Batteries: packs and chargers are genuine, from the tool's own platform.
- Returns: you know the return window and who handles it.
Each check is explained below.
1. The exact model and variant
One model name can cover several machines. SPTA lists its CP501 dual-action polisher with orbit options of 9, 12, 15 and 21 mm,[3] so each throw is in effect a different tool. Pick the variant on the listing, then compare it with the maker's own page.
Listing fields are not always right. In the listings we checked for this site, one corded polisher's listing gave a supply voltage that differed from the maker's manual, and another listed a corded polisher as battery powered. When the maker and the listing disagree, go with the maker.
2. A voltage the maker states
For a corded polisher, the voltage and plug should come from the maker. Some maker pages leave them out: SPTA's CP501 page and RUPES's LHR15ES page give orbit and power figures but no supply voltage, plug or safety mark.[3][4] North American suitability is not established from those pages. Look for a US-market model page, a manual or the nameplate that states it, and never use a plug adapter to make a tool fit.
3. Who is really selling
On Amazon, read "Ships from" and "Sold by" on the offer itself. Canada's Office of Consumer Affairs tells online shoppers to check whether they are buying from the retailer or a third-party seller, looking for wording such as "sold by", "shipped by" or "fulfilled by".[5] A Brand Store does not settle it: Amazon describes a Brand Store as a brand page that needs a Professional selling account and Brand Registry enrollment,[2] which tells you about the brand, not about who sells a given offer.
On AliExpress, a store name is a claim. AliExpress's membership terms say user verification online is difficult and that it cannot and does not confirm each member's claimed identity,[1] and its terms of use say it is not responsible for the quality, safety or lawfulness of products sold on the site.[6]
Check where the maker says it sells. The strongest evidence is a link from the maker's own site:
| Maker | What its own site shows |
|---|---|
| Makita USA | Its Shop Online page links Makita's Amazon Brand Store, alongside Home Depot, ACME Tools and other resellers[7] |
| Milwaukee | The 2684-20 where-to-buy panel lists retailers such as Home Depot, ACME Tools and Northern Tool, and did not list Amazon or AliExpress[8] |
| RUPES | A dealer and distributor locator and its own online shop[9] |
| UNI-T | A Singapore distributor; no AliExpress or Amazon store linked[10] |
| SPTA | Its own stores at sptamall.com and sptausa.com[11] |
| Linshang | Its LS221 page names an AliExpress listing only in the page's structured data[12] |
So an Amazon offer for the 2684-20 is not a channel Milwaukee's panel lists, and a UNI-T-named AliExpress store is not one UNI-T links. Linshang's reference is a listing its page points to, not a confirmed brand store.
4. Safety marks on the product
Health Canada says certification marks must appear on the product itself, not just the packaging,[13] so a logo in listing photos is not evidence. Report only what the maker states: UNI-T's UT343E page, for example, lists CE and UKCA and no North American marks.[14] The UL, ETL, CSA and CE guide explains what each mark proves.
5. Genuine batteries and chargers
Buy packs and chargers from the tool's own maker and platform. Makita USA warns that non-genuine Makita lithium-ion batteries may burst and cause fires, injury or property damage, and can defeat the battery-tool-charger communication system.[15] Makita adds that genuine batteries are black, carry the Makita logo with lithium-ion identification on both sides and the logo on the bottom, and that you should contact a Makita service center if in doubt.[15] Counterfeits can copy appearance, so the seller still matters. See genuine vs aftermarket tool batteries.
6. Returns
- Amazon.com says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with exceptions, and that third-party sellers may handle returns.[16]
- AliExpress's Free Return program lets buyers return participating products within 15 calendar days of receipt without giving a reason, subject to the program's conditions.[17] Check for the Free Return label on the listing itself.
Import duties, taxes and fees can also apply to cross-border orders; check what the checkout includes before you pay.

Questions
How do I know who is selling on Amazon?
Read the 'Ships from' and 'Sold by' lines on the offer you are buying. Canada's Office of Consumer Affairs gives the same advice: check whether you are buying from the retailer or a third-party seller.[5]
Does Makita sell on Amazon?
Makita USA's Shop Online page links its Amazon Brand Store. That does not make every offer Makita's: a Brand Store shows brand enrollment, not who sells a given offer, so still check 'Sold by'.[7][2]
Is the UNI-T store on AliExpress run by UNI-T?
We could not confirm it. UNI-T's global where-to-buy page names a Singapore distributor and links no AliExpress or Amazon store, and AliExpress says it does not confirm each member's claimed identity.[10][1]
Can I return a polisher I bought on AliExpress?
Only under the listing's terms. AliExpress's Free Return program covers participating products within 15 calendar days of receipt, subject to its conditions, so check for the Free Return label before ordering.[17]
What is the return window on Amazon?
Amazon.com says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with exceptions, and third-party sellers may handle returns themselves. Check the offer's own return terms.[16]
