Cordless polisher battery compatibility
Which batteries fit which cordless polisher: Milwaukee M18, Makita 18V LXT, FLEX and RUPES iBrid, in the makers' own words, and why same voltage is not the same pack.

Short answer
A cordless polisher takes the batteries of its own maker's platform, and only that platform. Milwaukee's M18 polishers take M18 REDLITHIUM packs,[1] Makita's LXT polishers take 18V LXT packs,[2] and FLEX's XFE 15 takes FLEX 18 V packs.[3] Matching voltage is not enough: RUPES's HLR75 and HLR15/21 are all 18 V but use different packs.[4]
Platform by platform
| Platform | What the maker says fits | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee M18 | The 2684-20 and 2685-20 polishers are compatible with all M18 REDLITHIUM batteries and chargers and run at 18 V DC. M12 tools take M12 packs, M18 tools take M18 packs. | Milwaukee[1][5] |
| Makita 18V LXT | LXT batteries work with LXT tools, including 36V (18V X2) tools; CXT and XGT are separate platforms | Makita[2] |
| FLEX 18 V | The XFE 15 suits all 18 V packs of the FLEX battery system | FLEX[3] |
| FLEX 24V | The FX3321 polisher is compatible with all FLEX 24V batteries, chargers and tools | FLEX[6] |
| RUPES iBrid | HLR75: its own 18 V 2.5 Ah pack and a charger custom designed for it. HLR15/21: an 18 V 5 Ah pack. | RUPES[7][4] |
Within a platform, packs move freely
Inside one system, makers say packs are interchangeable. Milwaukee says its batteries are interchangeable within a system and backward and forward compatible within it, but not across systems: M12 tools take M12 REDLITHIUM (12 V), M18 tools take M18 REDLITHIUM (18 V), and MX FUEL tools take MX FUEL REDLITHIUM (72 V).[5] Makita's rule is the same shape: 12V max CXT batteries with CXT tools, 18V LXT with LXT tools (including 36V 18V X2 tools), and 40V max XGT with XGT tools.[2]
So if your drill is M18 or LXT, its packs run an M18 or LXT polisher.
Across platforms, nothing is promised
No maker in our research says its packs fit another maker's tools, and none says an adapter is acceptable. Treat cross-brand adapters as outside the maker's system. The genuine vs aftermarket batteries guide explains why tool, pack and charger are evaluated together.
Within one brand, platforms are closed too. Makita says an LXT battery is not an XGT battery, and Milwaukee says an M12 pack does not run an M18 tool.[2][5] FLEX now promotes a 24V line alongside the 18 V packs its XFE 15 kit uses.[3] We found no FLEX statement on whether the two cross over, so do not assume they do.
Same voltage is not the same pack
RUPES makes this concrete. The HLR75 mini runs on an 18 V 2.5 Ah pack with a charger RUPES says is custom designed for it.[7] The HLR15 and HLR21 use an 18 V 5 Ah pack.[4] Same brand, same voltage, different pack systems. The label voltage is not a compatibility test; see 20V MAX vs 18V.
Chargers are platform-specific too
Makita says its 18V Rapid Optimum Charger cannot charge its 7.2V, 12V max or 36V lithium-ion batteries, which need different chargers.[2] Milwaukee's manual says to recharge only with the charger the maker specifies, because a charger suitable for one battery type may create a fire risk with another.[8]
Cordless polishers in our catalog
Both are sold as tool only, so the battery and charger are separate.
We do not list batteries or chargers yet: no genuine pack or charger we checked had a seller we could accept.

Questions
Will my Makita drill battery fit the XOP02Z polisher?
Yes, if it is a Makita 18V LXT battery. Makita says LXT batteries work with LXT tools, and the XOP02Z is an 18V LXT tool.[2][10]
Do M12 batteries fit an M18 polisher?
No. Milwaukee says its batteries are interchangeable within a system but not across systems: M12 tools take M12 packs and M18 tools take M18 packs.[5]
Can I use a battery adapter to run my polisher on another brand's packs?
No maker in our research approves one. Makita, for example, says its batteries are compatible only within each platform. Stay with the tool maker's own packs and charger.[2]
Do all RUPES 18 V batteries fit all RUPES iBrid polishers?
Do not assume so. RUPES lists an 18 V 2.5 Ah pack with a custom charger for the HLR75 and an 18 V 5 Ah pack for the HLR15 and HLR21.[7][4]
Can one Makita charger charge all Makita batteries?
No. Makita says its 18V Rapid Optimum Charger cannot charge its 7.2V, 12V max or 36V lithium-ion batteries, which need different chargers.[2]
