15 mm vs 21 mm polisher

15 mm machines pair with 5-inch plates, 21 mm with 6-inch. What Milwaukee and RUPES specify, why 21 mm is not automatically faster, and which suits your car.

Short answer

A 15 mm machine usually pairs with a 5-inch (125 mm) plate and a 21 mm machine with a 6-inch (150 mm) plate. Milwaukee's M18 pair follows that pattern.[1][2] A RUPES retailer describes 15 mm as more versatile on curves and in tight spaces and 21 mm as suited to large flat panels.[3] That is practical advice, not a measurement, and no source we found shows that 21 mm always corrects faster.

What the makers specify

MachineOrbitPlate or pad capacitySpeed range
Milwaukee 2684-20 (M18 FUEL)15 mm5-inch pad capacity[1]2,650-5,100 rpm, 8-position dial[1]
Milwaukee 2685-20 (M18 FUEL)21 mm6-inch pad capacity[2]2,400-4,500 rpm, 8-position dial[2]
RUPES LHR15ES (corded)15 mm125 mm (5-inch) backing pad[4]2,000-5,000 rpm[4]

Two patterns stand out. The 21 mm machine takes the larger pad, and it runs at a lower top speed than its 15 mm sibling. Milwaukee's manual lists 5-inch as the recommended pad diameter for the 2684-20 with 6-inch optional, and the reverse for the 2685-20.[5]

"21 mm is always better" is not supported

A longer orbit throw moves the pad farther on each orbit, so it sounds like more correction. RUPES does not frame it that way. It says the LHR15ES's 15 mm orbit is shorter than the LHR21ES's but runs at a higher rpm, which RUPES says gives it equivalent cutting power.[4] That is the maker's claim, not an independent test, but it is enough to drop the idea that the bigger number wins.

The practical difference is reach and panel size. ESOTERIC Car Care, which sells RUPES machines, describes 15 mm machines as more versatile for curved areas and tight spaces and 21 mm machines as suited to larger flat panels.[3] That matches the plate sizes: a 6-inch pad covers more of a flat hood per pass and fits less well into a bumper recess.

How to choose

  • One machine for the whole car: 15 mm with a 5-inch plate. It reaches more of the curved and recessed areas.
  • Mostly large flat panels (vans, trucks, hoods and roofs): 21 mm with a 6-inch plate, if you accept that it is clumsier on curves.
  • Both: a long-throw machine for panels plus a small one for tight areas covers both; see mini polishers.

Whatever the throw, the pad must suit the plate. Milwaukee's manual says the backing plate diameter should match the pad diameter, with the pad centered.[5] See 5-inch vs 6-inch pads.

One model name, four throws

Budget listings sometimes sell several throws under one model name. SPTA lists its CP501 with orbit options of 9, 12, 15 and 21 mm, rated 1100 W with a 5-meter cord.[6] Treat each throw as a different product and check which one the listing variant is. SPTA's page states no supply voltage, plug or safety mark, so North American suitability is not established from it.[6]

15 mm machines in our catalog

We list two 15 mm machines whose makers state the power source. FLEX lists the FC3321-Z as a 120 V corded random orbital polisher with a 15 mm orbit,[7] supplied with 5-inch (FT333) and 6-inch (FT334) backing plates, with a 6-inch maximum pad.[7] FLEX lists the FX3321 as a 15 mm cordless polisher on its own 24V battery platform with a 6-inch maximum backing pad,[8] and sells the FX3321-Z version as a tool only, without a battery or charger.[8] These are FLEX's own specifications. We do not list a 21 mm machine yet.

Questions

Is a 21 mm polisher faster than a 15 mm?

Not necessarily. RUPES says its 15 mm LHR15ES runs at a higher rpm than its 21 mm machine, which it says gives equivalent cutting power. That is RUPES's claim; we found no independent test either way.[4]

Can I put a 6-inch pad on a 15 mm polisher?

Some makers allow it as an option. Milwaukee lists 5-inch as recommended and 6-inch as optional for its 15 mm 2684-20, and says the backing plate should match the pad diameter.[5]

Which is better for a beginner, 15 mm or 21 mm?

A 15 mm machine with a 5-inch plate covers more of a car, including curves and tight spaces, according to RUPES retailer ESOTERIC Car Care. A 21 mm machine suits large flat panels.[3]

Why does the 21 mm Milwaukee have a lower top speed?

Milwaukee lists 2,400-4,500 rpm for the 21 mm 2685-20 and 2,650-5,100 rpm for the 15 mm 2684-20. Milwaukee does not explain the difference in the pages we read; a longer orbit already moves the pad farther on each orbit.[1][2]

What does a polisher listing with 9, 12, 15 and 21 mm options mean?

It is one model name covering several machines. SPTA, for example, lists its CP501 in all four throws. Check which throw your variant is, and confirm the supply voltage, which SPTA's page does not state.[6]
